A taste of Fitzrovia and Bloomsbury.
Paul Shelley has planned a walk which will take us through a photogenic quarter of central London. Hopefully you will find a range of photo opportunities as we stroll along.
We will start in Rathbone Square - a new square just north of Oxford Street near Tottenham Court Road station.
Wending our way through a series of alleys and chic streets we will cross Tottenham Court Road into the London University Campus. We pass the impressive Senate house and enjoy the tranquillity of a group of London squares.
Emerging at the Euston Road we take an underpass beneath the street and enter a little known area around Drummond Street. Here the curry house restaurants are struggling in the face of disruption from HS2 construction works.
Crossing New Gower Street we arrive at our final destination, Tolmers Square. This was the site of a historic encounter in the 1970’s. Students squatters were squatting in the Georgian terraces that were then on the site. The council was evicting them because it wanted to replace them with a new development of social housing. Now you can see the resulting tranquil garden behind the terraces. But history repeats itself because there are now threats of another redevelopment of the square.
The Square Tavern offers a welcome drink and supper before we disperse. Warren Street, Euston and Euston Square stations are all close by.
