Francisco was introduced by Gerard, one of many members with a background in architecture, and we were invited to take a copy of Non-Structures, a catalogue which complemented Francisco’s presentation.
Originally from Chile, Francisco continued his studies at the Bartlett, UCL and found exploring the changing shape of London fascinating and inspirational. He showed us images with the headings of Ghost Structures, Naked Structures and Non- Structures and these were images we may have walked past without registering their place in the city landscape. We were introduced to the idea of shrouded and scaffolded constructions as sculptural, shaping and reshaping the neighbourhood through the process of demolition, refurbishment or construction. From now on, we might all be more conscious of the visual impact of materials and colours of supporting structures, hoardings and wraps. Francisco shoots in overcast light and includes people when he feels they add to the image. Talking about the ‘expressive’ rather than the ‘decisive’ moment, he shared that he feels buildings have personalities - rather humble and embarrassed when shrouded, and strong and confident when finished!
There was much more - a discussion of facadism, sustainability and urban regeneration as it impacts on people - look at Francisco’s Instagram for more information - and look around at our buildings in their various stages as art forms and sources of documentary material.
