Many thanks to Steve Dennis, Dennis Law, Gerard Ryan, Michael Coleman and Richard Eyers for agreeing to share an image each, and compare the results with us all. We know from professional photographers who have been our guest speakers that often they have re-touchers or editors, but they follow an agreed 'recipe' or individual style. In this case, each person processed their own image and didn't see the final version from someone else's post-processing of that image until tonight. It actually was remarkable how similar were the cropping and atmosphere of the final images. There were some differences in contrast and tone, but what was particularly fascinating was the different approaches and pathways through Lightroom, to achieve the desired effect. The exercise gave rise to some lively debate and we discussed Silver Efex as a plug-in to make black and white conversions, and DXO for optimal sharpening. Very few of us knew about 'visualise spots', apparently in the Clone/Heal menu, some people used colour channels to adjust the image and others tried AUTO TONE first before defining individual settings. So thank you to all who participated.
After the break, we looked at the prints from our two summer walks, one in Hackney Wick, led by Susi Luard and the other led by Alan Larsen, through the City of London. It was great that the two prints voted as favourites were each by a newish member of the society and we enjoyed hearing more about why and how they had made their image. As an extra twist to the evening and with our on-going storytelling project in mind, we also looked at how the prints from each walk could be curated and presented to tell a story of the area or of the event.
We also celebrated the birthday of the society with not one, but three birthday cakes made by Dennis - so thank you for that, Dennis and thanks to Richard for the photos.
